There are some risk factors of IBS, but experts have confirmed that changes of weight are not one of them.

In people with gastroesophageal reflux disease, changes of weight can significantly affect the symptoms. But for IBS, weight changes wouldn’t directly factor into the condition – according to NIDDK (the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases).

Weight loss and weight gain can affect people with IBS. But these changes are not specific symptoms of the syndrome.

Instead, weight changes are likely to be caused by the following reasons:

  1. Dietary changes! As written before, patients with IBS need to take an appropriate diet to manage and relieve the symptoms. And this take time with a trial process, resulting in weight changes. Sometimes it’s required to eliminate entire food groups. This can cause the imbalance of nutrients, making weight changes more likely!
  2. Other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome such as fullness, bloating, and diarrhea may also affect the appetite level.

Finding the right diet for people with irritable bowel syndrome is challenging thing. To keep safe and for better result, work together with your registered dietitian!
