Topical treatments with salicylic acid

There are over-the-counters (plaster, ointments, gels, and creams) containing active ingredient called salicylic acid that often successfully in helping to treat the problem. About 2/3 of cases of warts on hands are successfully treated with Salicylic acid [2].

However, there is no clearly answer which one of methods among gels, creams, and ointments that works most effectively. But in general, salicylic acid has been used for one of standard topical treatments to get rid of warts.

The drawback, there is chance for the medicine to also affect the healthy tissue surrounding the warts. That’s why, it’s essential to protect the unaffected skin before applying the medicine. For instance, the use of a com plaster or petroleum jelly can help cover the unaffected skin of your finger around the wart.

It’s recommended to consult first with a doctor if you have other health conditions, particularly those that can cause poor circulation such as diabetes. The use of salicylic acid can increase the risk of developing damage to the skin.

Use emery board (a rough surface) to help remove any excess skin around the warts on your fingers – never share the use of the same emery board with others since virus can spread! Then soak the affected skin in the water in order to help soften the skin and allow the medicine penetrate better.

When the skin is damp enough, apply over-the-counter containing salicylic acid carefully – follow the package directions! Stop using it and see a doctor promptly if the skin becomes sore or if the problem gets worse!

Cryotherapy

This technique involves very cold substance (liquid nitrogen) to help freeze warts and kill the virus. After the treatment, you can have a sore blister – typically followed by a scab that will slough off about a week later.

The liquid cold substance of nitrogen can be directly sprayed to the warts or applied with a device. This can vary between healthcare professionals.

The use of duct tape

It may sound a little weird. But in fact, there are some sufferers choose this option to help get rid of their warts.

In this method, a piece of duct tape is applied over the wart. Leave it for about 6 days. If it falls off, just replace it with a piece of fresh duct tape.

After 6 days, get rid of the tape and soak the affected skin in the water. After soaking, then gently remove any rough areas with an emery board! Leave the affected skin uncovered and then apply a new strip of duct tape in following morning!

You may need to repeat the procedure for a period of up to 2 months. The benefit, it is less likely to cause side effect and affordable. But there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of this method!

Other treatments

Minor surgery or laser surgery is also available for warts. But this option is rarely used, unless the problem doesn’t respond to other treatments.

Additionally, the problem also can be treated with chemical treatments. These options are commonly only available on prescription.
