Will Hair Loss Stop After Stopping Birth Control?

Fortunately, many times the problem of hair loss triggered by birth control pills will improve and stop once you discontinue taking the pill.

But if the problem doesn’t improve after stopping the pill, see a doctor or dermatologist for more advice! For this case, there may be other causes or underlying conditions that have an effect in triggering the problem.

What is the key to cope with the problem?

Though the prognosis of the problem to improve is good, but you may worry that your pill can affect the health of your hair in long term.

The good news, most part birth control pills are a safe, according to AHLA (the American Hair Loss Association). However, AHLA recommends using birth control pills that use low-androgen index to reduce the risk of hair loss.

Even for women who have a strong predisposition for inherited hair loss, it’s recommended to take non-hormonal method for birth control.

Oral contraception is not the only one that can cause hormonal imbalance

The use of oral contraception (especially one that is high-androgen index) is not the single issue associated with hormonal change. The following methods of birth control also can affect the balance of hormones in women:

Depo-Provera

It is an alternative option for birth control if you don’t like taking pill every day. Even some experts claim that the effectiveness of this option is better than conventional birth control pills.

But it also can cause hormonal imbalance. Even about 1-5 % women who take it experience hair loss problem [3].

It seems that the side effect of Depo-Provera cannot always be predicted in every individual case! Fortunately, the effect is temporary. Once you stop using it, the hair loss problem usually will improve.

NuvaRing

It is also an alternative choice to prevent pregnancy. However, it works by releasing estrogen and progestin to suppress ovulation. And therefore, there is also a chance for this option to affect the balance of hormones.

What else?

The use of Ortho Evra (skin patch) and progestin implants also have an effect in the hormonal balance. While progestin implants releases progestin, Ortho Evra can releases both estrogen and progestin – these mechanisms can be potential to cause hair loss if your body is sensitive to the change of hormones.

Again, if you do believe that your birth control plays a key role in causing your hair loss problem, see a doctor to consider switching another choice that meet to your body needs and will be safe enough for your hair follicles!
