There are several types of acne medications to choose from — including pimple cream, how does it work? Its effectiveness can vary from person to person.

Furthermore, there are a lot of issues about acne treatments – from topically treatment to the advanced option like laser acne treatment. But in fact, it’s not always easy to find one that works best.

Is pimple cream effective and how does it work?

When it comes to discussing cream products for acne treatment, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are some of the popular ones. Another common choice is creams /gels containing specific antibiotics – this option is typically used with prescription.

Salicylic acid pimple cream

If compared with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid (a kind of keratolytic) is less common choice. And when it is used to treat acne, typically it is not recommended to be used on face and genital area. In general, it is commonly used to treat wart instead of acne.

How does this pimple cream work? Salicylic acid drives more moisture in the skin. It also can dissolve the substance that triggers the cells of skin to stick together, a good way to shed skin cells.

It is purposed for topical treatment, in other words it is only recommended for use on the skin only.

Moreover, it also can be potential to cause irritation. Therefore, the direct contact of this cream to the specific areas of the body (particularly such as groin, nose, eyes, face, mouth, and any broken skin) must be avoided! If there is an accident of getting this cream in these areas, flush them immediately with water.

Don’t forget to always wash both of your hands completely after use! Follow completely the directions on the package of the product!

Benzoyl peroxide pimple creams

It is commonly used to improve and treat mild-moderate form of acne. Sometimes it may be used with other acne medications.

Unlike salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide is safe enough to treat acne that occurs on the face. But it is not recommended to be applied on damaged skin. A direct contact with eyes, inside nose, and mouth also must be avoided.

How does benzoyl peroxide cream work? You can use it topically (applied the cream on the skin where the acne occurs). It works by making the skin to peel so will remove the pimple.

Today, there are a lot of benzoyl peroxide products, mostly are available without prescription. But some may require prescription, particularly for stronger dose.

Read all directions on the product package! Dosage is usually adjusted to your skin response to the therapy.

The result varies, but typically the significant improvement can be noticed after about 8-12 weeks of use. Sometimes early improvement may appear on 3 weeks of use.

How about side effects? There is a chance for the cream to cause some irritations on the skin such as redness, itching, and peeling — so apply the cream properly!

How about antibiotic acne creams – do they work?

As well we know, antibiotics are mainly designed to kill the harmful bacteria.

And the use of antibiotic to treat pimples is also pretty common since many cases of acne also involve bacterial infection. See also the role of bacteria in triggering acne on this section!

The goal is to help remove and kill the bacteria that make the acne spots inflamed and red.

Some common ingredients in antibiotic acne cream products are Erythromycin and Clindamycin. Consult with a doctor about the best antibiotic cream that works best and meets to your skin needs!

How about the effectiveness of this cream? According to a research published on the Journal of the American Medical Association, antibiotic acne cream /gel can help treat acne. But it is usually not enough for blackheads and whiteheads. If it does work, the improvement may appear about 4 to 12 weeks after use.

Another study found that the use of Clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide may provide faster healing, about 2 weeks after use. This suggests that the use of Clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide is more effective than the use of Clindamycin alone [source].

For Erythromycin acne cream, it may work better with zinc, why? Because zinc may help make it easier for the absorption of antibiotic into the skin!
