How does psoriasis have an effect in causing depression?

If you have psoriasis, there is a chance for the problem to make you feel significantly isolated – even deeply excluded. Depending on where it affects your body, it can be an embarrassing health condition.

Many times, people around you may not understand what you feel and what actually the disease that you have. Even some may be frightened by your skin problem. Eventually you may feel depressed because some people avoid you.

All these things can lead to a serious psychological problem and cause lots of psychological costs. This can get worse when combined with the symptoms of psoriasis (such as itching and other discomfort symptoms), resulting stressful emotions that can be so difficult to handle!

While psoriasis can cause stress and depression, the psychological problem itself such as stress also can worsen the disease and may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment! Therefore, emotional support is so essential and should be included in the treatment plan.

How to cope with the problem?

Many times, people with psoriasis are more likely to try ignoring the reactions of other people about their disease. But actually it is not easy to practice this option.

In fact, we are a social individual and dependent on others. So ignoring the reactions of people around you is not always the best idea to cope with the problem.

Sometime you may need to try explaining about your disease to other people, particularly about issues that can help you feel comfortable around them – though educating others about psoriasis is not always practical in every casual condition.

For instances, explain that your disease is not linked to poor hygiene and it cannot spread to others because it is not contagious health problem. Tell them that your disease is a chronic condition (lifelong condition), but it is being treated.

But if the problem has significantly affected the quality of your life, it is better to find professional help. A professional therapist /doctor can give more advice about appropriate steps you need to follow. If necessary, you may need to take medicines such as antidepressant to help cope with the problem.

Feeling depressed and chronic condition of your psoriasis may make you want to retreat from life – but stay away from this bad thinking because actually it isn’t your real choice! You have to keep motivated, follow the treatment plan, and work with your doctor!

Currently, there is no cure for psoriasis and the problem may come and go. But there are some treatment options. With appropriate steps, the flare-up of the disease also should be able to be prevented from recurring!
