Kidney stones! As the name suggests, they are solid matters that develop in the kidneys which then may travel somewhere else in the urinary tract. Sometimes they cause painful abdominal symptoms, including in the upper abdomen.

These stones are one of painful conditions. Even some people say passing kidney stones could be worse than childbirth. See also kidney stones in women!

Gallstones, another common thing to blame for upper abdominal pain! They are stones that form in the gallbladder, a pear-shaped organ attached under your liver.

In time, gallstones may cause gallbladder inflammation (medically called as cholecystitis). Cholecystitis may lead to the following signs and symptoms [5]:

  1. Abdominal pain, especially in the center or upper abdomen.
  2. The pain may radiate to somewhere else, affecting the back or shoulder.
  3. Abdominal tenderness (more sensitive to touch)
  4. Nausea and vomiting.
  5. Feeling sick (fever).

What else? Other conditions that may cause abdominal discomforts in women are as follows:

  1. Stomach irritation. It could be a consequence of acidic beverages (cola drinks), too much spicy foods, or regular use of aspirin (NSAIDs).
  2. Hepatitis or other liver problems.
  3. Giardiasis or other parasitic infections. Giardiasis is infection affecting your small intestine. It can lead to bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramps.
  4. Irritable bowel syndrome, a chronic disorder affecting the colon (large intestine).
  5. Chron disease (irritable bowel disease).

Abdominal symptoms could also be a consequence from food allergies, food poisoning, diverticulitis (inflammation in the intestines), inflammation of appendix (appendicitis), hernia, etc. So don’t make a conclusion on your own if you’re in doubt to your symptoms – see a doctor when you have to!
