If you notice some of your relatives have receding hairline, you’re likely to have one as well since this problem is often associated with genetic factor (though not always). Hairline that recedes aggressively may signal a condition called male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), particularly if the problem gets worse in time. The good news, there are a number of treatment options to fix it without surgery.

Human hair growth

To understand receding hairline associated with male pattern baldness, it’s always helpful to also understand the natural mechanism of your hair growth. There are 3 main phases of how your hair grows and regenerates throughout your life. Let’s take a quick look at these phases.

Anagen

Also called ‘active’ phase, this is when your hair grows actively (about 3 cm a month). Most of hairs on the scalp are going into this phase, so the scalp continues with full and thick hair. This period will last in years — the longer of this period, the longer the hair.

Catagen

Catagen is a period of transition between anagen and telogen. Here hair begins to stop growing actively, allowing hair follicle to renew itself. It usually lasts quickly, within several days (typically, no more than 2 weeks).

Telogen

It is a period of when your hair going into dormant stage. Here your hair becomes fragile and easy to fall out. How long does it take? This may vary, but it could last up to 2 months. In the end of telogen phase, a new growth of hair pushes the old one, and another anagen phase begins [1].

In male pattern baldness, the anagen phase lasts more quickly and hair follicles are likely to shrink and grow smaller. As a result, the hair growth doesn’t run as well as usual since the period of telogen (dormant phase) extends.

So, how to fix receding hairline without surgery?

Surgical treatment option (hair transplantation) would be your best bet if you’re looking for permanent result without involving multiple procedures. Most men with androgenic alopecia are good candidate for this transplantation.

But budget could be the major concern for most people. How much money you need to pay for hair transplant is dependent several factors, which is highly variable. But in general, it can range from $3.500 to $15,000!

It seems hair transplantation is costly for a medically inconsequential thing like receding hairline. The following non-surgical treatments could be alternative to help deal with.

Harklinikken’s hair extract

While it’s hard to trust the countless leave-in hair growth products out there, one product offered by a Danish company is quite promising. That is Harklinikken’s hair extract.

Unlike most leave-in products, it’s available for specific customization. The extract is not available for everyone. You need to be approved first to determine whether or not you’re good candidate for the treatment. Once you have approval, they would offer the best combination for your hair loss problem

It’s not clear yet whether it works for receding hairline from pattern hair loss. It’s also difficult to find comprehensive information how the customized extract works. But it’s worth a try. At least some objective testimonials show most users are enjoyable enough to give it a shot [2].

We can only find information that the formula of the extract, refined over decades (20 years), is made from various plant-derived ingredients. And the most important thing, it won’t do any harm.

Finasteride (Propecia)

This pill-form hair growth solution has been approved by the FDA to treat early signs of pattern baldness such as receding front hairline. It works by reducing an androgen hormone called DHT, dihydrotestosterone, which is often to blame for many cases of pattern baldness.

Since it can target DHT, it works more effectively than Minoxidil. Several scientific studies have confirmed that it works in the treatment of men with androgenic alopecia [3] [4].

But Finasteride is not recommended for female pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia in women). Unlike in men, the role of DHT to cause female pattern hair loss is not clearly yet. Interestingly, many women find that Minoxidil is quite helpful to deal with their hair loss problem. See more female pattern hair loss solutions!

Platelet-rich plasma

It is gaining popularity as a new treatment option for various types of alopecia. How about receding hairline of androgenic alopecia?

Your liquid blood (also called plasma) consists of several small solid components; such as platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells. Platelets have growth factor of protein required in the healing of injuries. Here platelet-rich plasma, as the name suggests, offers a ‘better’ function. It boosts the amount of platelets in the blood.

With more platelets in the blood with this treatment, the concentration of growth factors also increases significantly by about 5-10 times greater than usual [5]. As a result, this boosts healing process of the body.
