Pros

It is so affordable. You can get it at about $7-9 for a 16-ounce jar. If compared to other products for keratosis pilaris (KP) treatment, coconut oil is relatively cheaper.

As well we know that KP is more likely to get worse during winter and improve in the summer. And in colder weather, the oil is easier to use. Just put some oil in your hands for a few seconds, and it is ready to be applied topically on the affected skin.

You don’t need to melt the oil in the microwave. The natural heat of your body will make it return to liquid in a minute.

The oil usually works best when you apply it after shower. Shake the bottle and put some oil in your hands for a few seconds. And then apply it topically in the same way as a moisturizer. While the oil sunk into your skin, make sure the skin is not touching any of your clothes for a few minutes!

Cons

Some people don’t like the smell and texture. But this issue is actually personal preference that can vary from person to person.

You may find trouble about the feel of oily /even super oily products. The smell of the coconut oil itself is another discomfort thing for some people and you may be one of them that cannot stand with this issue.

However, there are also some people who love coconut a lot. If you are one of them, you will be so happy for about 15 minutes after applying the oil.

Overall, is it worth a try?

Despite the smell, texture, or another inconvenience – overall, it is not bad idea to try coconut oil for KP treatment. It is not expensive in price and easy to find. In long term, it is friendlier and safer for the skin, too.

The most important thing, many people say that it works. Although it may not provide permanent relief and the problem may return, but it can help ease the problem and improve the appearance of the affected skin.

As written before, KP can occur on face, too. Since face is one of the most sensitive areas, you may need to learn another treatment option, preferably with the help of a doctor /dermatologist.

The following are common procedures on how to use coconut oil for KP treatment:

  1. Before applying the oil, it is recommended to exfoliate the skin. This is intended to clean the skin or remove dead cells so thus the oil will work better. It’s recommended to also use apple cider vinegar after exfoliation, wait a few minutes and then apply the oil afterwards.
  2. Applying the oil after shower is more recommended, as noted before. After taking shower, squirt out a little amount of oil onto your hands (palms), rub it, and then gently apply it on the affected skin!

In addition, you may think that more oil you apply on the skin is better. But no matter how severe the problem is, it’s not recommended to apply too much oil! Irrespective of how much oil you take and apply on your skin, the effect will be the same!
