Does Cinnamon and Honey Work for Weight Loss?
There are still no strong scientific evidence about the effectiveness of cinnamon and honey for weight loss, but some small studies suggest that they might work to help lose weight.
Cinnamon is a spice ingredient, which is good in taste when you sprinkle it on lattes and toast.
Unfortunately, the effectiveness of cinnamon to help lose weight is not fully understood yet – though some studies showed that there may be a link between cinnamon and weight loss, as noted before.
Like spicy food, cinnamon can act as an appetite control. It reduces the feeling of hungry so thus you will eat fewer calories a day. One study suggests that it may help expand your flavor without adding extra calories.
Also it is probably good for your blood sugar health.
Typically, the body will release a lot of insulin (at the highest level) after eating (when the blood sugar level reaches its peak level). And studies showed that cinnamon is also a good controller for post meal-insulin level.
In other words, it is a good thing for your insulin sensitivity in long term. This could also be another reason why cinnamon is worth a try to help manage the feeling of your hungry.
These may include:
- Improving the metabolism of sugar in the body’s fat cells, lowering the risk of diabetes – according to a research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture in 2010.
- It may help control or reduce blood sugar levels, though this issue is still debatable since some studies showed that it doesn’t affect directly in improving blood sugar.
- It may also help reduce and improve inflammation.
- It may be effective to treat bacterial infection and provide positive antioxidant effects.
There are some options to enjoy cinnamon, from a cup of tea with honey or sprinkling it on microwave oatmeal.
In addition, there are two common types of cinnamon ; darker-colored cassia and Ceylon cinnamon. Or you can also find a mixture of both.
How about the dose? Is it safe to consume cinnamon at any dose in long term? Unfortunately, we don’t have a clearly answer about a specific dose to consume it safely.
But in general, cinnamon in very high doses are not recommended since this could be toxic.
The dosage may also depend on certain factors such as your age or certain medical condition you have.
While some believe that 2 to 4 grams per day is safe, 1-6 grams are also safe enough – according to Mayo Clinic.
However to keep safe, make sure to follow the product labels and the relevant directions, or consult first with your doctor if necessary!
Since honey is a kind of simple sugar, it can be easily absorbed by your body. About 20-30 percent of honey is water, and the rest is sugar.
Honey is also pretty high in calories – 1 tablespoon of sugar has 46 calories and 1 tablespoon of honey contains about 64 calories. Furthermore, it is also rich in protein, minerals, and other essential substances for your health.
Many studies have confirmed that consuming honey moderately would promote better health.
